How are Garment Sizes Measured?

Size chart in garments industry is the form with the measurements which is written the measure placement on garments, normally using for bulk operation and more than one size.

When we talking about the size chart, the memories are the shopping site, garments, we can see the size chart is Bust, Waist, Hips, more clear one would add weight and height, yes, this is size chart, normally using for buyers who take for themselves, the size chart in garment industry is similar but more complicate.

Why we need a size chart in garment industry?

Because it is a easy way to directly know the sample is follow your design or not, and tell the production group how is the design looks like by number, the way the workers understand, so no need to passing by anyone else, your design will directly send to the worker’s mind.

So how is garments industry size chart looks like? What is the difference, let’s see it

First of all, the garment industry size is for the garments not directly measure from body, so normally we will have different size charts for different design, like top, dresses, trousers, skirt etc, we will choose a shirt dress, trousers to explain, it would including most of the size

Normally the size chart is from the neck, we have neck width, front neck depth, back neck depth, let’s explain to you:

Neck width: left high shoulder point to right high shoulder point distance

Front neck depth: connect neck width by a horizontal line, the distance from this line to lowest center front neck

Back neck depth: connect neck width by a horizontal line, the distance from this line to lowest center back neck

After the neck, next is the shoulder, normally have shoulder seam length and shoulder across

Shoulder seam length: the distance from high shoulder point to the sleeve start seam

Shoulder across length: the distance from left sleeve start seam to right sleeve start seam.

Next are the armhole, arm opening, front bust, back bust

Armhole length: the circle length for sleeve start seam to underarm, sometimes clients like front armhole size and back armhole size to make the sleeve shape, the front armhole size is the length from front sleeve seam to front underarm

Arm opening: the circle length from armhole bottom to horizontal sleeve out side

Bust: the distance from left underarm to right underarm, some clients like the placement lower underarm 2.5cm, it would depend on clients.

Next are waist

Waist: lower under arm 15 cm, the distance from left side seam to right side seam

Next are sleeve opening, bottom opening

Sleeve opening: the distance from left sleeve opening seam to right sleeve opening seam, for the elastic sleeve opening, need to written it is before shrink or after shrink

Bottom opening: the bottom seam length from left side seam to right side seam, normally need to measure along the seam, if clients like straight length, need written straight length.

Hips: lower underarm 35cm, left side seam to right side seam

Above all are the width, we still have the height, like center length, side seam length, body length

Center length: the distance from center front/ center back to the bottom

Side seam length: the distance from underarm to the bottom

Body length: the distance from front/back high shoulder point to the bottom

The tops is waistband, so we start from here

Waist length: the distance from left waist to right waist

Hip length: lower waist 20cm, the distance from left side seam to right side seam.

Front rise: the distance from front waist band top to the gusset

Back rise: the distance from back waist band top to the gusset
